Volkswagen today unveiled the third and most advanced iteration yet of the up! family of concept vehicles at the Los Angeles Motor Show.

Named space up! blue and taking its visual inspiration and drivetrain layout from the classic 1950s Samba Bus, the concept vehicle is powered by a pioneering high-temperature fuel cell linked to a series of 12 lithium-ion batteries. The innovative power sources are linked to a rear-mounted electric motor developing 61 PS and 88 lbs-ft of torque. The only by-product of this highly efficient drivetrain is pure water.

Relying solely on the bank of lithium-ion batteries, which have a combined energy capacity of 12 kilowatt-hours, the space up! blue has a range of around 65 miles. When drawing energy from the high temperature fuel cell a range of 155 miles is possible – bringing the vehicle’s maximum theoretical range to 220 miles.

The new drivetrain is fully integrated into the space up! blue concept with a bank of solar panels built into the roof of the vehicle to allow the charge in the lithium-ion batteries to be topped up at all times when light falls on them. The high-temperature fuel cell meanwhile produces electric energy from compressed hydrogen, stored in a pair of secure tanks beneath the vehicle.

The innovative high temperature fuel cell developed by Volkswagen has several advantages over a conventional low-temperature fuel cell. The high temperature version is far more efficient as it converts more of the energy in the hydrogen into electrical energy. Furthermore it is less complex and does not require the same cooling systems demanded by a low-temperature variant – which also significantly reduces the packaging and therefore cost requirements of the cell unit.

Running on purely battery power the space up! blue is capable of reaching 62 mph in 13.7 seconds before reaching a top speed of 75 mph.

In design, the space up! blue continues the mix of clean surfaces and sharp, cohesive lines that define the look of the up! family which now comprises the up!, space up! and space up! blue. As well as featuring a recessed solar panel the roof of the space up! blue features a set of glass skylights reminiscent of the classic Samba Bus.

Despite being capable of carrying four adults in comfort and a total of 220 litres of luggage capacity the space up! blue’s dimensions remain modest, measuring 3680 mm long, 1569 mm high and 1630 mm wide.

The space up! blue’s interior, accessed through a pair of wide butterfly doors that hinge from both the A and C-pillars, features a unique mix of advanced, touchscreen interfaces and innovative materials. Many of the surfaces are constructed out of recycled materials – the instrument panel and the door mouldings are made out of organic plastics or biopolymers.

Development of production versions of the up! family of vehicles is underway with the aim of bringing a road-going version to the market before the end of the decade.

Toyota Australia today launched the latest generation of the LandCruiser wagon - the vehicle that helped Toyota establish its foothold in the world and Australian automotive markets.

New LandCruiser 200 Series has a stronger body, improved suspension, more powerful V8 engines that use less fuel and new technology that makes it even more capable in all conditions.

Advanced features include the Australian-invented Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS).

LandCruiser 200 also has the world’s first Crawl Control (on petrol models), multi-terrain anti-skid brakes and up to 10 airbags.

Toyota Australia’s senior executive director sales and marketing, David Buttner, said LandCruiser had evolved over almost 50 years from a basic four-wheel-drive utility vehicle into an upmarket SUV.

“Everything Toyota has learnt in half a century of building four-wheel drives has gone into the design, development and manufacturing of the new LandCruiser 200,” Mr Buttner said.

“It has retained the capability of the original LandCruiser, and added the comfort and convenience of a luxury sedan.

“New LandCruiser is more than a step forward; it’s a giant leap ahead in technology, performance, specification and value.”

LandCruiser 200 is available in three grades - GXL, VX and Sahara - with two engine choices, both of them V8s.

The new 4.5-litre twin-turbo, multi-valve direct-injection V8 diesel lifts power to 195kW and produces a massive 650Nm of torque.

This is 30 per cent extra power and more than 50 per cent additional torque than the previous six-cylinder turbo-diesel engine.

Fuel consumption has been improved by 6.3 per cent and is just 10.3 litres/100km1 based on the official ADR 81/01 combined cycle.

For the Euro IV-compliant petrol V8 engine, now with variable valve timing (inlet), power is up 18 per cent while fuel use is down almost 10 per cent.

“It really is amazing what Toyota is achieving with the latest generation of engines,” Mr Buttner said.

The updated petrol V8 is matched to a five-speed automatic transmission while the diesel engine is mated to a new six-speed automatic transmission.

Both have sequential shift that allows the driver to select gears manually.

The transmissions have artificial intelligence control, which allows their computers to select the appropriate gear ratio by estimating road conditions and predicting the driver’s intention.

New LandCruiser 200 will tow up to 3500kg and the towbar is now integrated into the chassis for maximum strength.

Engineers developed an all-new chassis structure that offers superior strength and rigidity by maintaining a separate frame and body.

Torsional strength has been increased by 40 per cent and bending strength by 20 per cent.

New LandCruiser 200 incorporates styling changes that add to its adventurous, rugged image.

It is 60mm longer and 30mm wider, contributing to greater interior space without sacrificing off-road manoeuvrability.

LandCruiser’s coefficient of drag has been significantly improved from 0.39 in 100 Series to 0.35 in new 200 Series.

The interior is all about space, comfort, security and safety for the driver and up to seven passengers.

With the adoption of shorter-format V8 engines, the bonnet length has been reduced for improved visibility.

The front pillars have been pushed forward to increase interior length by 130mm.

The front seats adjust over 240mm longitudinally and the second row also adjusts 105mm, which means more legroom in the third row.

For security against theft, all models have an engine immobiliser.

LandCruiser VX and Sahara also have an alarm.

A newly developed transfer case employs a Torsen® limited-slip centre differential with a dial-actuated locking function.

LandCruiser engineers designed all-new suspension hardware for dramatically increased wheel articulation.

KDSS enables new LandCruiser 200 to enjoy two previously contradictory benefits - longer wheel articulation for the most challenging off-road driving and the roll control needed for confident on-road driving.

KDSS is optional on GXL turbo-diesel and standard on the other five models.

LandCruiser’s chassis now employs high-mount double-wishbone suspension at the front with a hollow stabiliser bar and coil springs, replacing the torsion-bar set-up of the previous model.

At the rear, the reliable and trusted four-link with lateral rod, coil-spring system is further refined, delivering a longer suspension stroke for improved performance and better handling, ride comfort and stability.

The Crawl Control system on petrol models aids driving in extreme off-road situations, such as over rocks, sand or steep hills.

It automatically controls the engine and brakes to maintain very low speeds - in forward or reverse - with minimal spinning or locking of the wheels.

Multi-terrain ABS reads the available road grip to provide the correct brake strategy on dirt, gravel, sand and bitumen.

All models have Hill-Start Assist Control, which minimises vehicle roll-back when starting on steep hills or climbing slippery surfaces.

Turbo-diesel models also feature Downhill Assist Control, which controls speed on steep descents.

New LandCruiser features Vehicle Stability Control and active Traction Control across the range and up to 10 airbags - the most in any Toyota vehicle.

Recommended retail prices for the LandCruiser 200 range start at AUD$69,9902.

Arden has dedicated itself for over 30 years to the tuning of British cars and is one of the leading addresses for customers looking to emphasise the typical features and customise their Jaguars and Range Rovers. Arden has already devised an extensive range of modifications for the latest XKR model from Jaguar. As the Arden XKR AJ 20 Coupe, this big cat stands out with a displacement-increased engine and offers pure, unadulterated Jaguar enjoyment plus that distinguishing Arden touch.

Compressor power
Arden rebuilds the 4.2 litre V8 completely new and sharpens the claws of this big cat by increasing its displacement. The displacement increase to 4.5 litres is achieved by fitting a crankshaft specially produced for Arden, along with new con rods and pistons. Arden optimises the lubrication and the cooling and, in doing so, guarantees a long service life of the components, as it also does through its more than 20 years of experience in the field of Jaguar engine tuning. In conjunction with the modified intake and exhaust systems and sports catalytic converters, the fully recalibrated EMS produces an emphatic but harmonious power boost, whilst retaining the original exhaust gas classification. For drivers, these modifications translate into a vast increase in driving pleasure primarily due to the result of the compressor. Arden releases through the supercharged 4.5 litre an impressive 480 hp / 353 kW and a mighty torque of 640 Nm at 3,850 rpm. This guarantees a confident acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.1 seconds. A top speed of 305 km/h (reached on the test track in Papenburg, Germany) makes the Arden AJ 20 the fastest Jaguar currently on the road.

In neutral, the Arden AJ 20 purrs as softly as a kitten. But watch out when it stretches out its claws. The Arden AJ 20 Coupe expresses its additional power in the form of a deep growl, produced by a sports silencer system with the four chrome-plated tailpipes. Upon request, the system can be extended at any time up to a performance-enhancing complete system that includes catalytic converters.

Enhanced appearance and reduced aerodynamic drag
With the AJ 20 Coupe, Arden contrasts the more delicate appearance of the production version with a muscular look. At the front, the coupe is given an impressive “face” by fitting the Arden front spoiler featuring large air inlets. New side sills, also incorporating air inlets, continue the front design and create the appearance of the car being lower to the road. Arden swaps the side vents in favour of its own, colour-contrasting versions. The rear end constitutes the logical conclusion defined by the front design. Like the front section, the rear apron also features cooling openings. To effectively reduce the lift and to make it more sure-footed, Arden equips its AJ 20 with a rear spoiler, which blends perfectly into the basic design.

At the same time, Arden proves that attractive form and function need not be opposites, then the perfectly fitting, sporty, elegant aerodynamic kit provides not only a more enhanced appearance, but distinctly reduces the Cd value. During comprehensive wind tunnel testing, Arden succeeded the good Cd value of 0.385 pushed to an even better 0.357. A stunt not every vehicle modifier can accomplish.

Special finetuned sports suspension
When out hunting, big cats should always maintain good contact with the ground. For this reason, Arden modifies the suspension. The Jaguar specialist provides the AJ 20 with a complete sports suspension with specially produced shock absorbers. The fine tuning is designed to meet the ambitious sports driver and offers the best trade off of comfort and sportiness. Arden conducted extensive test drives on public roads and sealed-off race circuits.

The big cat creeps up on its prey on new 21″ wheels (FA: 9 x 21″ with 255/35R21″, RA: 10 x 21″ with 295/30 R 21″) in the exclusive and further advanced Arden “Sportline” design, produced by using latest state-of-the-art machines. In conjunction with the Arden sports suspension, they constantly optimise the road contact and successfully round off the appearance of the Arden AJ 20.

Arden has also proven to be an expert in know-how when it comes to the interior. For instance, the in-house upholsterer and Arden designer joiner’s workshop are responsible for numerous styling components. Anyone who prefers the famous British noblesse can order high-grade wood interior trim inserts. Motor racing fans will opt for sophisticated carbon-fibre trims to adorn the cockpit. Upholsteries in leather or Alcantara lend the car an extra special luxurious atmosphere.

The Ford Sport Trac’s urban alter ego debuts at this year’s Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show, proving that Ford can deliver aftermarket attitude straight from the factory.

The 2008 Sport Trac Adrenalin is a sport utility truck that combines the utility and functionality of a pickup with a bold new attitude and genuine sense of street style.

“The new Sport Trac Adrenalin is designed to appeal to the urban adventurer,” said Ryan Mitton, Sport Trac marketing manager. “It still offers up the functionality and capability that Sport Trac is known for, while boosting the style factor.”

The sleek boulevard-cruiser’s design was inspired by the Sport Trac Adrenalin concept that appeared at the 2005 New York Auto Show. Ford designer Melvin Betancourt was challenged to transfer the Adrenalin concept’s bold, more low-slung design to the production Sport Trac.

“The goal was to keep the overall design intact, right down to the wheels,” said Betancourt. “We had to make some minor adjustments as we went through the production process, but overall it’s been altered very little from the original concept.”

Adrenalin retains the Sport Trac’s distinctive profile, blending SUV and pickup, but the similarities end there. Every exterior panel from the beltline down has been redesigned or styled to deliver the Explorer Sport Trac Adrenalin’s cool, aftermarket look.

New front and rear fascias sit 3.5-inches lower than the units on the standard truck. Full running boards are seamlessly integrated into the body design and function to visually tie the front and rear of the truck together. The rubber step pads provide traction and add a striking graphic stripe that accents the lower portion of the truck.

“The new body panels give the Sport Trac the appearance of being lower – without actually lowering the vehicle,” said Betancourt. “You get a street cruiser look without compromising any of the functionality or capability.”

The front fascia mounts circular fog lamps in matte black binnacles, bringing in a touch of Mustang performance DNA to the Adrenalin. The prominent gloss black grille features a unique crosshatch pattern with the Ford oval badge mounted front and center.

“Graphically, the new grille gives you a bigger opening that adds to Adrenalin’s sinister look,” added Betancourt. “The crosshatch insert serves to visually set it apart from other Sport Tracs, giving the Adrenalin its own personality.”

Smooth side surfaces are the result of new front and rear fenders that lose their wheel lip mouldings. Functional front fender vents, exclusive to the Adrenalin, add visual interest to the vehicle’s profile. Adrenalin also motors without roof racks.

The rear fascia features a cutout for the dual-tipped exhaust. The design is finished with body-coloured mirror caps and a new tailgate with a distinctive Adrenalin badge spanning the surface of the gate in individual letters.

The interior delivers monochromatic richness. The Charcoal Black environment is accented by a stone gray headliner and features custom floor mats that are embroidered with the Adrenalin logo. Adrenalin offers the choice of cloth upholstered or premium leather-trimmed seats.

Adrenalin looks hot, bathed in special Colorado Red paint. Colorado Red, a true red without metal flake, is new to the Sport Trac lineup and will be launched with the Adrenalin. Additional colour choices are White Suede, Black and Silver Birch Metallic.

The 10-spoke, 20-inch wheels are the same units found on the Sport Trac Adrenalin concept. The polished aluminium wheels are shod with P255/50R20 Pirelli rubber.

Along with the standard 4×2 drivetrain, Sport Trac Adrenalin offers an all-wheel-drive system that’s more suitable for a street cruiser. In addition to providing sure-footedness on slick surfaces, Adrenalin’s AWD system offers a performance advantage as well. The system seamlessly transfers torque from the rear wheels to the front wheels as required to provide confident handling, reducing wheel spin and improving cornering.

Adrenalin will be in U.S. dealer showrooms in early January 2008. Base Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Pricing (MSRP) for Sport Trac Adrenalin begins at USD$30,495.

Attractively priced with an MSRP starting at USD$35,725, the X-TYPE 3.0 combines athletic performance with agile handling, a refined ride and all the luxury appointments expected of a Jaguar. And it continues to be the only compact sedan in its class to offer standard traction-enhancing all-wheel drive.

While the new MSRP is a slight an increase on 2007 base pricing, the 2008 version now includes, as standard, such high cost items such as Jaguar’s Tyre Pressure Monitoring System, 10-way power-adjustable front seats, memory driver’s seat and a message center/trip computer.

“The X-TYPE still has tremendous appeal to customers aspiring to a compact Jaguar with all the Jaguar luxury cues, and the benefit of standard all-wheel drive,” explains Marti Eulberg, executive vice president of Marketing and Sales, Jaguar North America.

Design - A True Jaguar
Introduced in August 2001, the X-TYPE was the first compact-sized Jaguar since the classic Mark II of the early 1960s. It followed closely behind the original S-TYPE – launched in 1999 – and made Jaguar accessible to a whole new segment of buyers, including many who had never previously considered a Jaguar.

The X-TYPE’s distinctive, wedge-shaped exterior – seven inches shorter than the S-TYPE – combines strongly sculpted forms – such as the powerful rear haunches and crisp detailing. This gives the car a sporty and purposeful stance, as well as the unmistakable presence of a Jaguar.

The styling incorporates familiar design cues from the last-generation XJ, like the sleek profile, quad elliptical headlamps and low-profile chrome mesh grille. And, of course, the famous Jaguar ‘leaper’ hood ornament.

Interior - Classic Style
Like the exterior, the X-TYPE uses classic Jaguar themes with a contemporary twist to provide an intimate, comfortable and thoroughly functional cabin. Traditional wood veneers in Bronze Sapele are combined with rich, leather seating surfaces. Attention to detail throughout the car reflects Jaguar’s rich tradition of craftsmanship, including the refined feel of control, as well as the overall high quality of fit and finish.

And for 2008, the X-TYPE 3.0 is better equipped than ever, with 10-way power driver and passenger front seats, a tyre pressure monitoring system and trip computer/message center added to the car’s standard interior feature list.

For the best in audio, a six-speaker, 120-watt AM/FM stereo with CD player also comes standard. Power door locks and power windows with one touch up/down are part of the long list of standard features.

Agile Handling, Refined Ride
Jaguar developed the X-TYPE 3.0’s driving dynamics to reward the driving enthusiast, providing nimble responses while delivering a traditional smooth, comfortable and quiet ride.

An exceptionally stiff body structure serves as the foundation of the X-TYPE’s agile handling and compliant ride. The four-wheel independent suspension, employing a MacPherson strut layout at the front and a multi-link torsion control link system at the rear, delivers a high degree of inherent stability. The front struts are mounted at the top via a unique, twin-bearing system to reduce friction and enhance steering feel.

AJ-V6 Power For Athletic Performance
The X-TYPE’s 24-valve, four-cam 3.0-litre AJ-V6 engine is derived from the S-TYPE’s proven AJ-V6 powertrain, and uses a lightweight alloy cylinder block, alloy cylinder heads and a steel crankshaft. With advanced features, such as continuously variable cam phasing and advanced, 32-bit engine management system, the engine delivers spirited and athletic performance coupled with competitive fuel economy and low emissions.

The 3.0-litre engine is highly efficient, delivering 227 bhp and 206 lb-ft of torque. Mid-range torque is particularly impressive, with more than 90 percent of peak torque available between 2,500 and 6,000 rpm, and more than 80 percent available from below 1,500 rpm through the maximum engine speed of 6,800 rpm. Against the stopwatch, the X-TYPE is an athletic performer. In benchmark 0-60 mph acceleration, the X-TYPE 3.0 automatic covers the distance in just 7.1 seconds.

Ring Of Safety
Safety is key with the X-TYPE 3.0 sedan, as it is with every Jaguar. Standard safety features include anti-lock brakes with Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD), three-point safety belts throughout and pre-tensioning front safety belts with load limiters.

The X-TYPE’s advanced airbag system features dual-stage deployment of the front airbags, front seat-mounted side-impact airbags and state-of-the-art side-impact head protection curtain airbags for the front and rear outboard occupants.

Helping protect the lower legs of the driver, the X-TYPE features an inflatable knee bolster airbag located within the driver-side footwell. Side airbags that deploy from the outer side bolsters of each front seat and the curtain airbags complete what is known as the ‘ring of safety’. This ‘ring’ helps protect the driver and passengers on three sides of the cabin.

Traction-4 Delivers All-Weather Control
The X-TYPE 3.0 derives its great-driving character from the Jaguar Traction-4™ advanced all-wheel-drive system – the first in Jaguar’s history. It’s an innovation that sets the X-TYPE apart from its competition as it continues to be the only car in its class to come with standard traction-enhancing all-wheel drive.

The new Skyline coupe builds on the strengths and attributes of the current Skyline sedan - attraction, sophistication and high-performance - and takes them to an even higher level. It combines dramatic styling and a refined, driver-oriented interior with the advanced performance made possible by a newly developed, innovative VVEL (Variable Valve Event and Lift) 3.7-litre V6 engine and a high-performance platform to create a vehicle that will appeal the discerning coupe buyer.

A Glamorous, Dynamic Exterior
The new Skyline coupe’s seductive exterior design starts with its powerful, elegant front fender curvature, flowing silhouette and glamorous front and rear fenders. The expressive front fascia features characteristic Skyline fender lines and a low, rhythmic, wave-like hood. The sculpted, bright-finished grille and L-shaped Bi-Xenon headlights add to its commanding presence. Large wheel wells, Skyline-signature LED combination taillights and dual exhaust enhance the new Skyline coupe’s high-performance appearance. A unique front bumper with matching side sill spoilers is available with Skyline 370GT Type SP and S models. Seven exterior colours are offered, including Nissan’s two new colours: Vibrant Red and Luna Mare Silver.

A Highly Refined Interior, Innovative Technology
The new Skyline coupe’s interior is designed with one overriding goal: to make driving a joy. The comfortable, embracing driver’s position and supportive seats combine with a parallel hand-stitched, genuine leather-wrapped steering wheel and light, sturdy magnesium paddle shifters to set the stage for driving exhilaration. The stylish curves of the front seat and door trim help create a sporty elegance. Two interior colour schemes are available - Fauve, with real wood trim (manufacturer option), or Cool Black, featuring real aluminium trim.

The Skyline coupe interior also offers an array of advanced technology systems, including an Intelligent Key system that electronically locks the steering, immobilises the engine and handles other jobs according to the key ID for enhanced theft prevention. Also available is a Blind-Side Monitor system that assists the driver when pulling to a curb or parallel parking, by displaying a view of the blind areas around the front left of the vehicle. The Blind-Side Monitor is offered together (as a manufacturer option) with a RearView Monitor system, which displays images behind the vehicle through the use of a compact CCD camera.

The HDD CARWINGS navigation system (manufacturer option) now includes a touch panel for greater convenience. Besides the navigation function, it is packed with entertainment features, including the Music Box recorder/player and playback of DVDs, audio and video media, as well as Bluetooth Hands-Free features.

The Skyline coupe also offers a premium Bose audio system, which turns the cabin into a very special listening environment. The advanced Bose system, available as a manufacturer option, features top playback quality in an onboard system and includes a pair of three-way integrated speakers in the doors and four woofers in the doors and rear shelf.

Exhilarating, Exciting Performance from a New Engine and Advanced Platform
The new Skyline coupe continues to offer exceptional levels of driving performance, ride comfort, roominess and utility through use of the advanced FM (Front Mid-ship) package and FR-L platform. First utilised in the V35 Skyline, the newly enhanced FR-L platform combines a sturdy, low-vibration body structure that makes the driver feel one with the car with high performance and stability - while also satisfying safety and environmental requirements.

At the heart of the Skyline coupe’s dynamic performance is the newly developed VQ37VHR engine, which responds briskly, accelerates smoothly, is fuel efficient and attains high emissions standards. The VQ37VHR represents a new generation of high-performance engines and, at 333 horsepower, is the most powerful V6 in its class. Generating 90% of maximum torque between 2,400 and 7,000 rpm, the engine power is light, smooth and easy to handle right up to the 7,500 rpm redline.

The VQ37VHR’s new, advanced Variable Valve Event and Lift (VVEL) system continuously changes the angle and lift of the intake valves, depending on the degree of acceleration and speed of the engine. The fully symmetrical air intakes on right and left increase the volume of intake air and reduce pumping loss, significantly increasing responsiveness. The result is the simultaneous achievement of seemingly conflicting needs: quick acceleration response, high power, low fuel-consumption and cleaner exhaust.

The new powerplant is mated to a choice of manual or automatic transmissions. The close-ratio 6-speed manual transmission allows for quick shifting and sporty touring using a short-stroke design and triple-cone synchros for the first three gears. For ease of operation, the Skyline coupe’s available full-range electronic 5-speed automatic transmission includes a standard automatic shifter plus a driver-side manual shifter. The normal “D” mode provides smooth driving, while shifting to the “DS” mode provides a sportier feel. The transmission’s ASC (adaptive shift control) adds comfort by automatically selecting the best gear for cornering, downhill driving and other critical situations to suit both the driver’s style and environment.

Nissan engineers maximised sturdiness and lightness in the Skyline coupe’s double-wishbone front suspension and multi-link rear suspension designs to enhance stability and responsiveness, as well as driver control. The dual-flow pass shock absorbers were developed through extensive review of damping force and rebound spring criteria, helping create the Skyline coupe’s smooth, refreshing ride feel while maintaining high levels of manoeuvring stability.

To match braking capability to the increased engine performance, the Skyline coupe employs four-wheel aluminium-calliper opposed-piston brakes (standard on both the SP and S versions of the 370GT) - which are designed to optimise the stroke at low speed and provide secure stopping power at higher speeds. The standard 4-wheel Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) also includes Electronic Braking Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA), while Intelligent Brake Assist is available as a manufacturer option. The Skyline coupe also features standard Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) and a speed-sensitive hydraulic power steering system.

Another advanced performance feature available with the new Skyline coupe is Nissan’s four-wheel active steering (4WAS) system, which adjusts the steering-linked angles of front and rear wheels according to speed, making the vehicle more responsive to the driver at low and medium speeds, and stable and smooth at higher speeds. 4WAS is standard on both the SP and S versions of the 370GT.

Leading-Edge Safety and Environmental Technologies
The Skyline coupe also offers a long list of convenience, safety and environmental features, including Bi-Xenon headlights with Active AFS (Adaptive Front lighting System), door mirror with heater, flat-blade wipers, fuel efficiency gauge and reduced levels of volatile organic compound used in the cabin, which helps create better interior air quality.

Standard safety equipment includes rigid, safe Zone Body construction, driver and front passenger SRS Air Bag System, driver and front passenger SRS Side Air Bag System, SRS Curtain Air Bag System, Active Front Head Restraints and three-point ELR rear seat belts. Emergency Brake Operated Pre-crash Front Seat Belts are optionally available.

The Skyline coupe body has been designed to offer greater pedestrian protection, including the application of Nissan’s new “pop-up engine hood” technology. When sensors embedded in the front bumper detect an impact with a pedestrian, the system’s control unit determines if the hood needs to be instantly raised. If deemed necessary, the control unit activates a pyrotechnic actuator that raises the rear edge of the hood, creating a larger, protective buffer space between the hood and hard engine components underneath. This helps cushion the impact to the pedestrian’s head if it collides with the hood.

From an environmental standpoint, all Skyline coupe models are certified as SU-LEVs, meeting 2005 standards to cut emissions by 75%. In addition, over 95% of the vehicle is recyclable (based on definitions of recyclables for new cars and calculation guidelines by the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association, 1998).

Models and Sales Target
The new Skyline coupe is available in four models, each equipped with the new 3.7-litre VVEL V6: 370GT, 370GT Type P, 370GT Type S and 370GT Type SP. Target sales are 200 units per month.

GM Holden’s sleek new VE Commodore Sportwagon made its world debut today at the Australian International Motor Show in Sydney.

The new family vehicle takes VE Commodore’s award-winning sporty design and engineering advances and integrates them into a stylish and practical wagon.

The result is a desirable and functional addition to the VE range, offering a new level of comfort, safety and styling in a Holden wagon.

GM Holden Chairman and Managing Director Chris Gubbey said, “The new VE Commodore Sportwagon puts the excitement back into practicality. This is a car for families with a ‘get-up-and-go’ attitude.

“The generous interior space, combined with sleeker, sportier styling, makes this a wagon that people will want to own as a year-round family car, or for family and business use.

“Holden’s new VE Sportwagon turns practi-’cal’ into practi-’cool’,” said Gubbey.

The VE Commodore Sportwagon unveiled in Sydney today is a production-based concept vehicle. It is the first glimpse of the planned production model scheduled to hit Holden showrooms in the first half of 2008.

The vehicle draws on VE sedan at the front with a sleek and sporty silhouette at the back and is built on the same VE wheelbase. It is the third VE derivative after sedan and the newly released ute range.

Features
At the rear, Holden’s designers have cleverly created a wider opening by positioning the tailgate hinge well forward into the roof line. This has created a more vertical opening movement for the tailgate and reduces opening space required around the car.

The higher cargo floor makes loading easier and a flexible cargo cover provides extra security for items stored in the back.

VE Sportwagon seats five adults in comfort and a 60:40 split in the rear seating row can be folded flat for storing larger items.

The motor show display model includes a roof mounted DVD player, Bluetooth capability, multi-function driver information display system and zone-based front and rear park assist systems - all currently standard on the VE Calais V-Series sedan. Features on the vehicle unique to the motor show include 20-inch alloy wheels, chrome window trim and unique interior colour combination.

VE Commodore Sportwagon’s pricing, model line-up and powertrain combinations will be confirmed closer to the on-sale date, but expect to see a similar type of strategy to VE sedan, with entry level cars, sports models and luxury models ranging up to the luxurious VE Calais V-Series.

Leading safety technology features such as ESP® will be standard across the range.

Holden’s Executive Director Sales, Marketing and Aftersales, Alan Batey, said, “Sportwagon breaks the mould for Holden wagons. It’s got great style, performance and practicality for families, businesses or both.

“Customers will get a car that’s equally at home as a working tool or a desirable family car - with all the storage advantages that come with a wagon.

“We’ve added important safety features such as ESP® as standard, and more luxury versions will be incorporated into the range to further increase its appeal to families.

“This is a vehicle that people will desire for its looks as well as its convenience over a sedan or an SUV,” he said.

Technology
The concept model on display at the Australian International Motor Show also incorporates a V8 engine featuring Active Fuel Management (AFM) and E85 flex fuel capability. Active Fuel Management allows cylinders to turn off under light load conditions to improve fuel economy.

The engine on show runs the same spark ignition, with fuelling matched to the same equivalence ratio as Holden’s current production V8 engine. It is designed to match the power and torque outputs of its petrol equivalent. The use of AFM and E85 technologies in this motor show vehicle aims to highlight General Motors’ capabilities in new propulsion advances.

Chris Gubbey explains, “Showcasing an E85 fuel system in this vehicle makes a powerful statement about Holden and GM’s commitment to developing alternative energy sources that reduce our dependence on petroleum-based products.

“It also demonstrates that drivers of alternative fuel vehicles don’t have to sacrifice performance.

“Our sister brand Saab has led the way in promoting bio fuel technology to advance the public, political and commercial debate in this area. We want to add our voice to that debate whilst simultaneously looking at ways to further reduce fuel consumption in our existing engines.”

The current VE sedan range of vehicles on sale in Australia are all E10 compatible with Holden’s V6 engine built in Melbourne also converted to E24 in Commodores exported to Brazil.

In 2007 Holden added two new diesel engines to its product line up with the new 3.0 litre VCDi common rail turbo diesel for the Rodeo and Captiva’s 2.0 litre common rail turbo diesel. This adds to the diesel options already offered in the Astra range.

Mitsubishi Motors Corporation announces today that it will launch the Lancer Evolution X high-performance 4WD sedan, newest of the company’s legendary vehicles, on October 1 at dealerships throughout Japan. Featuring a new platform, engine, and exterior and interior designs, the totally redesigned 2.0-litre model will carry a tax-inclusive price tag ranging from ¥2,997,750 to ¥3,750,600. Models fitted with the Twin Clutch SST transmission are due to be launched towards the end of November.

The development goal for the new Lancer Evolution X was to make the car as fast as possible, while also making it as safe to drive as possible. To that end Lancer Evolution X is loaded with the very latest in automotive engineering technology, including the S-AWC (Super All Wheel Control) vehicle dynamics control system and the newly developed, power-efficient Twin Clutch SST (Sport Shift Transmission). Lancer Evolution X is a new-generation high-performance 4WD sedan that allows a new category of driver access to Mitsubishi’s dynamic driving experience by underpinning speed with control, security and safety.

Lancer Evolution X’s handsome and aggressive functional design presents an intimidating and exciting aerodynamic exterior suggestive of its superior road performance. This is complemented by a functional interior that encourages the driver to concentrate fully on piloting his machine. Lancer Evolution X uses the front end design identity common to all new Mitsubishi Motors sedans (inverted-slant nose with a trapezoidal grille design) first seen on the new Galant Fortis*. As well as shouting loud the aggressive qualities that mark a high performance sports sedan, the front fascia is crafted for optimum aerodynamic performance.

Lancer Evolution X realises very high levels of motive and driving performance thanks to its new high-output and lightweight 2.0-litre DOHC MIVEC turbocharged engine with aluminium block, an all-new body and stiffer suspension. Despite its turbocharged pedigree the new model earns a 3-star rating for emissions that are 50% lower than the requirements of the Japanese 2005 standards. And complementing its powerful and clean road performance is the kind of a safety specification one would expect of a new-generation high-performance model: SRS dual-stage airbags for driver and front passenger, SRS knee airbag for driver and adaptive front lighting system (AFS) are all standard equipment on the GSR trim level.

The Twin Clutch SST is a 6-speed automated manual transmission incorporating a dual automated clutch system to deliver lightning-fast, slick shifting for feel-good acceleration; while it also provides high-efficiency power transmission for outstanding fuel economy. In keeping with the higher output and torque developed by the new engine, Lancer Evolution X is offered with a new 5-speed manual transmission that delivers smoother shifting and improved shift feel for those who prefer the joys and more direct control of manual shifting.

All Lancer Evolution X GSR models are fitted with the S-AWC vehicle dynamics control system. The system intelligently manages several component systems to regulate drive torque and braking force at each wheel, reading and reflecting driver intent in real time over a wide range of situations. This allows drivers of all abilities to enjoy sporty driving with peace of mind.

For those whose definition of pure driving pleasure includes wind in the face and sunshine above, the new BMW 1 Series Convertible follows the tradition established by the iconic BMW 2002 sport sedan. The essence of such driving purity - a responsive six-cylinder engine positioned within a rear-drive chassis to provide balanced, sporty dynamics - is at the heart of this compact four-place convertible.

The 128i Convertible, which joins the new 1 Series Coupe going on sale in the spring of 2008, will be powered by BMW’s 3.0-litre, 230 horsepower inline six-cylinder engine generating 200 lb-ft of torque. Like its fixed-roof stablemate, the 128i Convertible will feature Valvetronic valvetrain management and aluminium/magnesium cylinder block construction-core elements of BMW’s EfficientDynamics.

The 135i Convertible, on sale later in 2008, features BMW’s twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder engine producing 300 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque from as low as 1,400 rpm. With its direct piezo gasoline injectors, twin low-mass turbochargers and air-to-air intercooler, optimum performance and economy is achieved with no loss in engine response. For the 135i Convertible, acceleration from 0-62 mph is accomplished in 5.6 seconds and top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph. Both engines feature on-demand engine coolant pumps that improve fuel economy and reduce parasitic losses for increased efficiency.

Distinctive BMW Convertible appearance
In a mere 22 seconds-even on the move at speeds up to 25 miles per hour-the occupants within the 1 Series Convertible can go from encapsulated comfort to top-down exhilaration. If conditions dictate, the electro-hydraulically-operated soft-top can be raised within the same 22 seconds, producing a distinctive silhouette enhanced by long frameless doors. The characteristic features of the BMW kidney-shaped grill, front skirt, door sills and rear skirt are identical to those of the 1 Series Coupe.

The standard soft-top is available in either black or taupe cloth, but it is the optional Moonlight Black version which is unique to the 1 Series Convertible. Interwoven with fine shiny metallic fibres, this distinctive top produces a shimmery metallic silver appearance in sunlight. The visual effect enhances the convertible’s exciting range of nine colours which includes an exclusive hue: Cashmere Silver Metallic.

A distinctive feature of the 1 Series Convertible is the flared shoulder line which runs parallel to the road. This shoulder line flows from the hood past the A pillar to the trunk lid, forming a surface which encompasses the entire interior, giving the impression of a boat deck.

The view from the rear is influenced by the position of the soft-top: with the top lowered, completely concealed in the tail, the look is flat and elegant; the appearance with the top up is broad shouldered. The trunk lid has an integrated spoiler chiselled into the rear end of the car to accentuate the short rear section. On the 135i, an additional lip spoiler provides greater downforce on the rear end at high speeds.

The individual sections within the L-shaped rear taillights give the vehicle a lower, sportier look. Horizontal lights integrated in the rear light clusters offer a homogeneous lighting effect with the help of light-emitting diodes (LEDs). This light design, as found on other BMW models, makes the BMW 1 Series Convertible stand out at night. Also, the Adaptive Brake lights operating in two stages in relation to brake application force are yet another feature typical of BMW, with the additional benefit of extra safety on the road.

The standard (on the 135i) Adaptive Xenon Headlights (optional on the 128i), complete with integrated cornering lights, make driving in the dark safer than ever. The daytime headlight function, in typical BMW style, uses the four corona rings around each headlight to enhance the visibility of the car under normal and “murky” light conditions.

Convertible interior features technology enhanced comfort, convenience
Two unique BMW 1 Series Convertible features provide increased driver and passenger comfort, thus improving the overall experience regardless of the top’s position. The optional Boston leather incorporates BMW’s Sun Reflective Technology where pigments worked into the upholstery mitigate the effect of the sun’s ultraviolet rays. Excessive heating of the seats and armrest is diminished, especially for darker interior colours. The overall effect can produce surface temperatures some 20 degrees Fahrenheit below a comparable “normal” leather interior.

The standard upholstery is a sporty and comfortable Leatherette, which is also the covering on the optional Sport Package’s sports bucket seats with enhanced side support (Boston leather can be selected for this package).

The climate-control system in the 1 Series Convertible has an additional convertible mode (compared to the system in the BMW 1 Series Coupe) designed for open-roof conditions. The three standard modes; gentle, medium and intensive, react primarily to interior sensors, while the convertible mode reacts less to interior temperature and more to the exterior temperature and sunlight factors to establish the intensity of the ventilation.

Turbulence in the roof-down cabin can be reduced by an available wind deflector which can be affixed to the sides of the vehicle with a few adjustments. The wind deflector allows for conversation at normal sound levels and the ability to enjoy the wide variety of audio and communication offerings which include SIRIUS satellite radio, HD radio, the optional Premium Sound system and Bluetooth. For simple and straightforward connection of an MP3 player, an auxiliary input jack is standard and a USB port for direct control of an Apple iPod or iPhone media player is available as an option.

The control console for the entertainment and climate-control functions is integrated smoothly and harmoniously into the dashboard through its soft radii and flowing surfaces. With the optional navigation system, the iDrive controller is integrated in the center console, following BMW’s characteristic philosophy of full driver control at all times. Galvanised pearl gloss surfaces adorn the interior door handles, the glove compartment handle, the radio’s rotary knobs, the knobs of the automatic air conditioning system, the iDrive controller, and the ornamental trim strips featured on the sport steering wheel.

Enhanced iDrive provides programmable memory keys
BMW’s iDrive is included with the optional navigation system. It enables the driver to control all secondary and comfort functions such as communication, air conditioning, entertainment and navigation functions easily and conveniently.

This latest version of iDrive is equipped with six Programmable Memory Keys allowing the driver to program often-used functions such as navigation destinations, radio stations or specific telephone numbers. Touch-sensitive sensors on each button allow the driver to preview the function on the iDrive screen before the button is fully depressed, activating the command. This allows the driver to choose the stored function safely and conveniently, keeping his or her eyes on the road in the process.

Spacious trunk supplemented by folding seat backs and storage bag
An active couple can carry their gear, regardless of the season, thanks to the generous trunk space offered by the 1 Series Convertible. Two golf bags will fit in the trunk of the new 1 Series Convertible - even with the top down! Lowering the soft-top produces a storage space that is 8.48 cubic-feet, which does not include the optional large storage bag that extends into the passenger compartment and can accommodate two snow boards or a golf bag without soiling the upholstery. A zippered opening allows access into the storage bag from within the passenger compartment.

High-tech suspension with newly-developed differential
In traditional BMW style, the new BMW 1 Series Convertible transmits the power of the engine to the rear wheels. This design concept and configuration - engine at the front, drive wheels at the rear - guarantees optimum traction, near-perfect weight distribution front-to-rear, excellent directional stability, and predictable handling.

The front suspension is also built to a standard quite unique to its competitive group. The new 1 Series Convertible shares the 1 Series Coupe’s sophisticated suspension system with an aluminium double-pivot front suspension and a five-link fully independent rear suspension in lightweight steel to offer an optimum combination of stiffness and low weight. The very stable track control arms and thrust rods make an important contribution to the car’s driving dynamics and provide exacting wheel control.

The standard BMW Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) includes a Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) function that provides electronic intervention to prevent loss of vehicle control, but at a higher threshold before activation. This allows the driver to experience more spirited driving on dry roads and offers more flexibility when driving in more challenging conditions such as in the snow. If the driver desires, both DSC and DTC can be disabled. Active Steering, a variable ratio steering system exclusive to BMW, is available as an option.

The rear differential on the 1 Series comes from a new generation of final drives optimised for running smoothness. Featuring double-helical ball bearings for the first time, the differential runs at an even lower operating temperature reached more quickly than before thanks to the reduction of fluid required in the differential. Like the 1 Series Coupe, the Convertible features an electronic limited slip function built into the vehicle’s Dynamic Stability Control system.

Safety equipment maximised for convertible design
The four standard airbags in the new BMW 1 Series Convertible are designed for the optimum protection of the car’s occupants. The advanced frontal airbags are activated in stages in relation to impact severity while the side airbags integrated into the sides of the front seat backrests reduce the risk of injury at chest, hip and head levels in side impact situations. The new BMW 1 Series Convertible also comes with crash-optimised seats with specially padded headrests and backrests designed to reduce the risk of injury in an impact from the rear.

All seats within the 1 Series Convertible are fitted with three-point inertia-reel seat belts and headrests, with the front seat belts fastened on the frames of the driver’s and front passenger’s seats, keeping the belt in an optimum position around the occupant’s hips regardless of seat height or fore-aft placement.

Also, the driver’s pedals move back automatically with a predetermined amount of deformation in the event of a frontal collision so that the risk of driver foot injury is reduced. And last but not least, the rear seats come standard with LATCH attachments for child seats.

The new BMW 1 Series Convertible is equipped with a roll-over sensor, which continually monitors the vertical and horizontal movements of the vehicle. As soon as the sensors register the danger of the vehicle rolling over, two roll bars are extended in fractions of a second from their storage areas behind the rear headrests. Simultaneously, the front-seat-belt tensioners and the head airbags are activated. Further roll-over protection is offered by the optimised stability of the A pillar and windshield frame.

Most electric vehicles operate under the assumption that driving is merely a necessary evil if you need to get someplace you can’t reach on foot or bike. The result has been cars that are designed, built, and marketed in ways that refuse to glorify driving.

We respectfully disagree. We believe driving is exhilarating. Just watch any child on a go-cart and the joy is plain to see. And when you can soar along at top speed, knowing the only oil in the car is in the transmission, the only emissions are the songs from the radio, the ride becomes more enjoyable still.

The Ultimate Multi-Fuel Vehicle
Electric cars equal freedom. Not simply from oil reliance, but from dependence on any specific power source. Electric power can be generated from natural gas, coal, solar, wind, hydro, and nuclear sources — or a combination of all of them — without changing the design of the car. No matter how or when the world changes, the car adapts, making it immune from obsolescence.

We foresee a day when all cars run on electric power and when people will struggle to remember a time when a love of driving came with a side order of guilt.

No More Tradeoffs
Up until now, if you wanted a car with amazing gas mileage, you’d pick something like the leading hybrid; but when you pressed down the gas pedal to zip up a freeway on-ramp, you’d likely be a little disappointed — it takes over 10 seconds to reach 60 miles per hour. On the other hand, if you demanded the 0 to 60 times of a $300,000 supercar, you’d wind up with an embarrassing 9 miles to the gallon in the city.

How It Works
When you build a car that’s electric, you start with one built-in advantage: Electric cars just don’t have to be as complex mechanically as the car you’re probably driving now. Sophisticated electronics and software take the place of the pounds and pounds of machinery required to introduce a spark and ignite the fuel that powers an internal combustion engine.

For example, the typical four-cylinder engine of a conventional car comprises over a hundred moving parts. By comparison, the motor of the Tesla Roadster has just one: the rotor. So there’s less weight to drive around and fewer parts that could break or wear down over time.

But the comparison doesn’t end with the counting of moving parts. The engine and transmission of a conventional car also need lubricating oils, filters, coolant, clutches, spark plugs and wires, a PCV valve, oxygen sensors, a timing belt, a fan belt, a water pump and hoses, a catalytic converter, and a muffler — all items requiring service, and all items that aren’t needed in an electric car.

The Tesla Roadster’s elegantly designed powertrain consists of just the four main components discussed below. Mind you, these aren’t “off-the-shelf” components, and each includes innovations, both small and large. But when you build a car from the ground up, you have the luxury of questioning every assumption — and to distill as you reinvent.

The Energy Storage System (ESS)
When we set out to build a high-performance electric car, the biggest challenge was obvious from the start: the battery. Its complexities are clear: it’s heavy, expensive, and offers limited power and range. Yet it has one quality that eclipses these disadvantages and motivated us to keep working tirelessly: it’s clean.

The Tesla Roadster’s battery pack — the car’s “fuel tank” — represents the biggest innovation in the Tesla Roadster and is one of the largest and most advanced battery packs in the world. We’ve combined basic proven lithium ion battery technology with our own unique battery pack design to provide multiple layers of safety. It’s light, durable, recyclable, and it is capable of delivering enough power to accelerate the Tesla Roadster from 0 to 60 mph in under 4 seconds. Meanwhile, the battery stores enough energy for the vehicle to travel more about 245 miles (EPA city/highway) without recharging, something no other production electric vehicle in history can claim.

Motor
Some people find it hard to imagine our car’s Lamborghini-beating acceleration comes from a motor about the size of a watermelon. And while most car engines have to be moved with winches or forklifts, ours weighs about 70 pounds — a strong person could carry it around in a backpack (although we don’t recommend it). Compare that to the mass of machinery under the hood of $300,000 supercars that still can’t accelerate as quickly as the Tesla Roadster.

But more important than the motor’s size or weight is its efficiency. Without proper efficiency, a motor will convert electrical energy into heat instead of rotational energy. So we designed our motor to have efficiencies of 85 to 95 percent; this way the precious stored energy of the battery pack ends up propelling you down the road instead of just heating up the trunk.

Transmission
Our transmission couples the fuel efficiency of a manual with the driving ease of an automatic. The Tesla Roadster has only two forward gears, allowing you to fine-tune your driving experience (but either gear will work for most driving scenarios). Unlike a manual transmission, the car will not stall if you have it in the wrong gear. There’s also no clutch pedal. Just move the lever and the electronic control module takes care of the shift, so you can launch from a full stop to freeway speed without taking your focus off the road, your foot off the accelerator, or your hands off the wheel.

Power Electronics Module (PEM)
Most of the subsystems in the Tesla Roadster are completely electronic and under direct software control. But unlike all other cars, these systems are not a hodge-podge of independent systems — instead, they are designed as an integrated system, the way complex network and computer systems are designed today.

You’ll see the hub of this network every time you pop the trunk — the Power Electronics Module. When you shift gears or accelerate in the Tesla Roadster, the PEM translates your commands into precisely timed voltages, telling the motor to respond with the proper speed and direction of rotation. The PEM also controls motor torque, charging, and regenerative braking, and it monitors things like the voltage delivered by the ESS, the speed of rotation of the motor, and the temperatures of the motor and power electronics.

The PEM controls over 200 kW of electrical power during peak acceleration — enough power to illuminate 2,000 incandescent light bulbs.
